Growing up, I loved how these flowers appeared every winter as a staple of Christmas décor, and I was always sad as they’d faded in the new year, which is why I decided to paint poinsettias, as the cuetlaxochitl is colloquially (and colonially) known in the US. I suppose that’s what inspires me to paint most flowers, including these forget-me-nots and even these surreal daffodils.
