In visual art, France is personified by Marianne, who’s a symbol of the liberty, equality, and fraternity that are French ideals and who’s often shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a kind of soft conical hat that came to be associated with fighting for freedom. This bee as Marianne wants the liberty to exist, equality for all living things, and sorority with the planet.

The American version of this poster depicts Uncle Sam. You can watch the making of Liberté, Égalité, Sororité—the video is in French.
