In painting this portrait, I was largely inspired by George Bellows’ Stag at Sharkey’s, one of the subject’s favorite paintings. Though the link may not be immediately clear in this case, it is a bit more so for this portrait, where I quoted the floating roses from Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus for the subject. Five years after painting these goldfish for Erik, I painted clownfish for Crime Against Nature.
