This portrait was part of the big shift in my style which happened in 2005 as a result of a new brush—a wide flat one. This painting from 2008 was part of another change. I cut my right thumb open as I was working to complete this series by a deadline. This forced me to find new ways of adding layers of paint, including watering down my acrylics and pouring them onto the canvas. Six years later in 2014, I was still honing the watered-down method in pieces like this one.
