Nathan’s portrait is representative of a lead I did not follow until three years later. It’s part of a series of images of actors in character called the Trickster Project. Each of the paintings were a combination of an actor’s likeness and a trickster’s qualities. In Nathan’s this case, I was working with the iconography of the Coyote trickster of Native America. In 2007 and 2008, I blended real people with iconic characters, both fictional and historical, in a whole new way, and I did it again in 2017 with this painting.
