I created this portrait without ever meeting the subject, something that, in the first couple of decades of my career, I only did a few times and only when the subject was deceased, as was the case here. Another posthumous portrait I painted was this one of my cousin, but, in that case, I knew the subject and I worked from a photo which I had taken of him myself.
