No matter the intention I set, the result has been the same for over twenty years now.
I keep making visual art that comes with a lot of text. I’m not talking about an overly long title for a given piece or even an elaborate artist statement that lends a particular body of work some richness. Rather, my tendency is to write whole books to go with my paintings and drawings.
And I’m proud of that work, for sure. I love how my bookworm approach to being a painter has provided me with innumberable opportunities. I’m thinking, for example, of things like working with my hero Dr. Joan Roughgarden for this project and also appearing in Queerying Nature, a documentary that showed at film festivals all over the world and on Belgian public television.
But I’m ready for a change. I’m ready for Series XX.
Last month, I announced this new collection of paintings and explained that I’d be talking about it mostly on Patreon, which is what I’ve done.
These are some studies I’ve made for that new collection—studies that I’m now rethinking based on exchanges I’ve had with the incredible humans who support my work on Patreon!
I’d love for you to be part of that conversation. Patreon allows you to set custom pledges and you can even pay for an entire year of membership up front if you’d rather not have an additional monthly bill.
Maybe this post made you think of something you want to tell me? Or perhaps you have a question about my art? I’d love to hear from you!
