For the last three weeks of August, I’m going to be working on a mural in the reception area of an office.

These are conceptual renderings of the four walls I’ll be painting. The entrance is here, and this is only a partial wall because there’s a built-in desk here.

There’s a ton of natural light flooding into the space from that direction, so I designed the mural to make it look like when you walk into the office you’re walking towards a clearing in the forest. And as you leave you get to enjoy the new life of the sapling growing among the larger trees.

Here are the process images of me figuring out how to do the sapling wall, starting with a completely different tree. At first, I thought the structure of a deciduous tree would make a nice contrast among all the evergreens, but I eventually decided that a sapling’s symbolism was more interesting. I ended up starting over on the rendering for this wall in order to get the sapling’s light just right.

As I work to bring this vision into reality over the last three weeks of August, I’ll post updates for paying members on Patreon only. The work itself is going to be intense, so, while I’m excited to share the journey, it’s going be a bit seat-of-the-pantsy, which is to say that I’ll be sharing in a way that’s less polished—and more vulnerable too. I’ll be talking about my process day-to-day: what I got done, what surprised me, that sort of thing.
