Keeping the Little Man Barefoot and Pregnant (Pot-bellied Seahorse)
2012
acrylic on panel
10 x 10 inches
This piece makes me think of the portrait of a pregnant woman I painted in 2006 as part of a series of “before” and “after” portraits of women in transition. For more about the making of Keeping the Little Man Barefoot and Pregnant, check out this vlog. Below is the text from the book Crime Against Nature that goes with this image.
Sometimes girls aren’t the ones who give birth.
In all species of seahorse, including the pot-bellied seahorse, the female inserts a tube into a hole in the abdomen of the male, depositing her eggs in his pouch. The male incubates the eggs inside his body and gives birth to live baby seahorses.
