Single Mom (Black Rhinoceros)
2012
acrylic on panel

Between the second half of this diptych, which was my first portrait of a mother and child, and the painting shown here of a mother rhino and her baby, many things have changed in my work. I’m not just talking about subject matter either. My style was softened a lot in the interim by the introduction of watered down paints which I pour directly onto my compositions.
For more about the evolution of my style, check out this video. This blog post shows the making of Single Mom.
Below is the text from the book Crime Against Nature that goes with this image.
Sometimes boys mate with girls, but leave once the babies are made.
Among black rhinoceroses, adults come together to mate, but after a few days or a few weeks they separate again. Mothers raise their calves for two to three years but chase them away as they prepare to give birth again.
