For the first seventeen years of my career, I painted portraits almost exclusively from photos I’d taken myself of the subject, but, when COVID hit, that all changed. While I miss meeting all the people I paint for a variety of reasons, there have also been some fascinating discoveries, like this image of a little boy. I’m not sure I would have picked such a classically cherubic image of the child if his mother hadn’t been the one to send it to me.
Hugsalot reminds me of Daughter, though in that case I was working from my own photos, just as the child’s mom was. You can see the making of Hugsalot.
