For this painting, my mother showed me how to sew canvas scraps together. The resulting seams are chunky—perfect for paint to stick on in all sorts of unplanned ways as you can see in the detail image below. I enjoyed painting on canvas patchwork so much that I painted all of Mutually Beneficial on it as well as a number of You Bags—of me, my sweetie, my friend, and even this performer—though my mom did all the sewing for those projects.
