Blog / 2021 / Shout-out to the People Who Understand My Art
January 10, 2021
This post was originally scheduled for Thursday January 7th because, despite obvious signs, I believed that 45 wouldn’t try anything too outrageous during Congress’ counting of the Electoral College votes on Wednesday. I’ve spent the last few days convinced that Trump is going to nuke something before we manage to take that power away from him—so not exactly in a bloggy mood. But, in the end, I’ve decided that, if we’re all going to die at the hands of the sorest loser ever, I want to have thanked you.
Knowing who your audience is makes all the difference for an artist. Same goes for learning from your audience, and that’s something that JK Rowling, the inventor of the fandom that’s referenced in this video, clearly does not understand. She refuses to acknowledge trans women as women and, worse still, she carries on about being “canceled” when anyone pushes back on her bigotry. The creator of Harry and Dumbledore is a bully, and this artwork is not an endorsement of her views. It’s a celebration of everyone who has found comfort and community in the Potterverse!
Outside of the Lifesavers Fan Art series, I’ve referenced the following pop culture imagery in my art to make various kinds of commentary: Hello Kitty, the Little Prince, the Wizard of Oz, and Wonder Woman along with a bunch of American icons for my Apple Pie collection. That last is an excellent example of how “too pretty” my work is for political purists, along with Crime Against Nature and Empathetic Magic.

Art is the love of other humans made tangible across space and time. When a person can’t get a hug from a friend, art is there to make them feel seen and understood. Please share my work with your favorite people!
Maybe this post made you think of something you want to tell me? Or perhaps you have a question about my art? I’d love to hear from you!
