Though I painted Randy’s portrait in 2005 as part of Public Faces, it didn’t make much of a splash until four years later with this article that made certain false claims about the elitism of portraiture. As an avid self-portraitist, I’ve done a lot of thinking about how little portraiture actually is about ego.
