Until the Lifesaver Fan Art series, I hadn’t made any real fan art, preferring to reference pop culture characters in my work only if it allowed me to make commentary about anything from the failure of copyright to the misogyny of many of our leaders. My masked SpongeBob marks an important transition for me artistically, because it was in the precise moment that I decided to loop his mask elastics around his arms that I understood the fun of making fan art.
