I like to pretend I don’t have a favorite color—that I love all of them equally—but my art gives me away. The bright pink in this drawing and this painting is the one color that makes my eyeballs happiest.

My love of pink is one of the unintended consequences of my mom’s decision to paint my childhood bedroom’s walls and ceiling pink, but it’s not the only one. Another repercussion is the total revulsion I feel towards the prison of so-called gender “norms,” which is what inspired Crime Against Nature, this piece, and basically my entire art career.
